this is also the age of enlightenment, so we have journalism as entertainment and its education. on the left is the new jersey gazette from 1778 where the right to columns are dedicated to the reestablireestabli shment of the continental army. it details the infantry, the artillery and the calvary and on the left the column dedicates mathematical theory. on the right is the freeman's journal printed in philadelphia, where the entire front page is dedicated to news of the surrender of cornwallis in poetry. advertising is also something that struck me in the sense that there are a lot of advertisements for runaway slaves, indentured servants for sale for soldiers. david mccullough is an advocate for primary sources and the general public and students reading primary sources and what he says is that these deserted soldiers advertisements in newspapers or where we get a lot of the information about what the uniforms look like. they are describing the soldiers that had deserted. another adjusting advertisement that struck me was in the january 20, 1770 issue of the pennsylvania ledger

while we don't have all the details of the early notification and education plan there, the framework is clear and i think it's a good starting point to move forward for the city and i believe that while we have had comments about talking about caution i think they're well meaning how to have a successful program but i think the success of the program is that we roll out quickly with the notification and the education plan. that's going to be most meaningful. i also want to make sure that we're really clear that the effort is really working in the deep green areas first and foremost where we know a particular target audience is for the message and we know how to craft that message for them as well. i think that is going to be significant. we're not reaching out to every population in san francisco from the get go but the deep green area is where we need to focus the efforts on. this plan incorporates that and i believe it's the right way to go. i would like to move forward approving something today that can later be implemented early next year and hopefully we can move that in that di

how we continue to make investments in things like education, things like infrastructure, that help our economy grow. and keep in mind that the threat of tax hikes going up is only one part of this so-called fiscal cliff that everybody has been talking about. what we also have facing us starting tomorrow are automatic spending cuts that are scheduled to go into effect and keep in mind some of these spending cuts, that congress has said will automatically go into effect have an impact on our defense department but they also have an impact on things like head start. so there are programs that are scheduled to be cut that we're suing -- using an axe instead of a scalpel, may not always be the smart text cuts. so that is a piece of business that still has to be taken care of. i want to make clear that any agreement we have to deal with these automatic spending cuts being threatened for next month those also have to be balanced because my principle has always been let's do things in a balanced, responsible way. that means revenues have to be part of the equation in turning off the sequester
